Jesse Cunningham’s work has always been about cultivating fluency in different genres and forms, less to break down barriers than to demonstrate that those barriers generally do not exist. He’s interested in music as a medium of communication, and the thousand intersections of culture that constitute musical tradition. He writes music to explore that history. He likes how ideas that are considered complex in some cultures are elementary in others, like the mixed-meter crooked Métis tunes that require elaborate description in musical notation, but are so obvious that they don’t bear thinking about to the fiddler.
