Perogy Making Challenge

Prizes awarded for the top perogies!

The Deep Freeze Festival welcomes you to its Perogy Making Challenge! We are looking forward to an outstanding event full of friendly competition. Our goal is to enjoy this competition and some of the best Perogies in the Greater Edmonton area.


RULES AND REGULATIONS:

  1. There will be three (3) categories of Perogies: Savoury, Dessert, and Wild Card. (Wild Card Perogies can be any sort of variation on the traditional perogy that is creative and stays within the parameters of the rules listed below)

  2. The entry must have been prepared by the person entering the contest.

  3. One entry per person.

  4. Individual perogies must be at least 3 inches in length and there must be at least one dozen (12) perogies available for tasting. They must be visually identifiable as the dumpling shape that is the Ukrainian perogy.

  5. All entries must be brought in disposable containers. The container shall not be marked in any way to make the container unique or identifiable.

  6. Applications must be submitted no later than Friday, January 10, 2025 @ 4:00 p.m.

  7. Perogy Turn-in time will be on Sunday, January 19 until 4:30 pm at the Alberta Avenue Community League (south doors). PEROGIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY 4:30 P.M. OR WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN JUDGING!

  8. Judging will take place at 5:00 pm. Perogies will be judged by appearance, taste, and texture. Judges will pick the 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place winners.

  9. Winners will be announced at 5:30 pm.

  10. Following the announcement of the winners, the uneaten portions of the perogies may be picked up in the judging area.


PRECAUTIONARY NOTE - Home-canned vegetables or meats are not permitted in the product. Recipes must be provided that show which ingredients were used in each part of the product. Contestants should carefully wash their hands and make sure that their hands do not have any open cuts before preparing food.

Judging

  1. Judging will begin at 5:00 pm

  2. Minimum of 4 judges

  3. Judging will be based on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, for a total of 60 points on the following criteria, without consultation with other judges:

    • Presentation

    • Taste & Flavor

    • Consistency & Texture

    • Overall impression

  4. The perogies receiving the top 3 total numerical values will be considered 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. In the case of a tie, the judges will judge those perogies again.

  5. The decision of the judges is final. Judges will not know contestants' names.

  6. Winners will be announced after the judging is complete.

  7. Participants must be present during the contest and judging

Tourtière Baking Challenge

The Deep Freeze Festival welcomes you to its Tourtière Baking Challenge! We are looking forward to an outstanding event full of friendly competition. Our goal is to enjoy this competition and some of the best Tourtière in the Greater Edmonton area.


RULES AND REGULATIONS:

The entry must have been prepared by the person entering the challenge

  1. One entry per person.

  2. Tourtière must be at least 8” in diameter.

  3. All entries must be brought in disposable pie plates. The container shall not be marked in any way to make the container unique or identifiable.

  4. Applications must be submitted no later than Friday, January 10, 2025 @ 4:00 p.m.

  5. Pie Turn-in time will be on Saturday, January 18 until 4:30 pm at the Alberta Avenue Community League (south doors). TOURTIERE MUST BE RECEIVED BY 4:30 P.M. OR WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN JUDGING!

  6. Judging will take place at 5:00 pm. Tourtières will be judged by appearance, taste, flakiness, and after-taste. Judges will pick the 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place winners.

  7. Winners will be announced at 5:30 pm.

  8. Following the announcement of the winners, the uneaten portions of the pie may be picked up in the judging area.

Although we will have microwaves available, tourtières should be transported and stored in a warm container, particularly if they have a flaky crust.

  2. Minimum of 4 judges

  3. Judging will be based on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, for a total of 60 points on the following criteria, without consultation with other judges:

    • Presentation

    • Taste & Flavor

    • Crust

    • Consistency & Texture

    • Aftertaste

    • Overall impression

  4. The pies receiving the top 3 total numerical values will be considered 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. In the case of a tie, the judges will judge those pies again.

  5. The decision of the judges is final. Judges will not know contestant names.

  6. Winners will be announced after the judging is complete.
