Arts of Life performing studio “Kalyna – Tetractys” is a not-for-profit centre for youth and adult performers. The studio supports the research and development of new performing practices and concepts, creation of public outreach programs and encourages experimentation by performers through diverse programming.

You can see them in The Hearth performing Ukrainian folk tales and out on the festival streets in their vibrant costumes, singing, dancing and performing.

Behind the Alberta Avenue Community League

Fire Dancers, Mounties in Red Serge, Chinese Dragons and the Northlands Indigenous Princess, Britney Pastion, singing O’Canada in Cree and English will kick-off the longest, most breathtaking Canada-themed Red & White fireworks spectacle on Saturday evening. This will be a celebration of Canada’s 150th Birthday and an evening to remember at Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival. 

We continue to remember one of Edmonton’s strong festival leaders, Don Snider. This is the fifth year we raise a glass in his honour.

“A Round Dance is a traditional First Nation’s community celebration. The Round Dance was traditionally used by the Cree First Nation as a social dance. Its original purpose was to honor someone who had passed on so that the family could grieve in the proper way. Today, however, the Round Dance is used for all kinds of different reasons, from honouring someone for their accomplishments, or celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, weddings or graduations.” ~ G. Watch for Emily Elf around the festival streets! One misfit elf, amazing feats of strength, and a 12 foot human Christmas tree is the recipe for an action packed show to thrill audiences of all ages. With a combination of breathtaking stunts and hilarious comedy, Emily Elf and her team’s quirky antics charm and delight her audiences in an holiday adventure that leaves them wanting more!

Our indigenous neighbours welcome you! Enjoy traditional activities, both Saturday and Sunday, including traditional storytelling, music, dance, snowshoeing, crafts and delicious bannock. 

In the Cree language January is referred to as the Great Moon ‘kise-pisim’. As part of our January Deep Freeze Festival we say ‘Tawow’ or ‘welcome’ you to a great indigenous experience. By visiting our Pipon Village (which means winter in Cree), you can gather round our central hearth to warm your hearts and hands as well as visit with Indigenous Artisans selling their wares while you sample tea and hot bannock freshly made over the fire.

Keep your eyes open for these frolicking pants and sweaters as they have their own silly kind of frozen fun on the festival site.

Knife & Axe Throwing and Buck Sawing

Try your hand at the life of a lumberjack! Jack Axe brings Knife Throwing and Buck Sawing to Deep Freeze – two authentic lumberjack activities! Speed saw your way through a log with our unique buck saw challenge. The buck saw is a lumberjack event that involves cutting through a log as fast as possible. This challenge can be done solo, or as part of a team.

Cool Runnins’ Deep Freezer Race

118 Avenue at Alberta Avenue Community League

Come and join in the fun! Bring your friends and family for the ride of a lifetime. Teams of five (ages 12+) race toward the finish line to challenge for the fastest time. Bring helmets – deep freezers are provided.
